This year’s installment of the 6-12-24hr World Time Trials Championship did in fact have the flair of a world/international event with a quality roster of racers representing 5 countries including Slovenia, United Kingdom, Italy, Canada and of course the U.S. The race field doubled in size over the inaugural year, and the results were doubly impressive.
The Men’s 24hr event saw all four of the top finishing men eclipse last year’s record of 432.6 miles set by Ian Fillinger. Marko Baloh out distanced the group with an exceptionally strong race of 495.4 miles finishing just under 10 miles ahead of Adam Bickett. Bickett lost 37 minutes to Baloh on the 2 long loops and that proved to be the difference in the end. Dave Haase placed third, 37 miles behind Bickett and only one slim mile ahead of the charging Ben Rockett. It really appeared that Baloh and Bickett were locked in their own personal race as were Haase and Rockett. Bad luck for Chris Hopkinson as he had a multitude of mechanicals that took him out of contention for the podium. He credits fellow racer Dave Haase for saving his race. In true Ultracycling fashion Haase stopped to assist with repairs and loaned Hopkinson his spare wheel.
Seana Hogan once again made it perfectly clear (as if there was a question) that she is back, and she can no doubt dominate. It seems that every photo of Seana racing is the same; comfortably positioned over the aero bars, a look of concentration and turning over a Big Gear. No doubt the same picture was taken this weekend; however, photog Lena Caton was able to get her to crack a smile. And with good reason, Seana took the women’s 24hr win and established the new women’s record of 432.2 miles. Oh, and she finished a mere 3 minutes behind men’s 5th place finisher Hopkinson. Lisa Dougherty finished just one short loop behind Hogan with 416.4 and Anna Mei was 3rd with 345.5.
In the 12hr race, Jim Verheul turned in a very strong long loop and was ahead of Joel Sothern by 16 minutes. He was concerned, and rightly so that the cagey veteran Southern would use a steady and somewhat more conservative pace to catch him in the end. It seemed to be working as Southern made up just about all of the difference by race end. It was however, Verheul that prevailed with a very thin 9/10 mile cushion at 240.5 miles to take the win. Wayne Dowd and John Caton were locked in a heated battle for third. They both finished with 216 miles, but it was Dowd finishing just scant seconds ahead of Caton. Other notable performances were turned in by: Team Forman/Whitefield who won the men’s 2 person 24hr team title with 416.4 miles, Rod Palomino who won the Men’s 6 hour with 110.6 miles. Alexa Dickerson and Lan Tran both turned in 94.8 mile efforts in the Women’s 6 hour.
